INTRODUCTION

ï‚· Doodling, drawing from story books and school books from the very childhood. ï‚· Started painting in Mithila /Madhubani style in the mid 70's. ï‚· Worked as an assistant to Naomi Owen , an ethnomusicology st from USA in 80s in a research project on folk songs of Mithila. EXPERIENCE IN ART TEACHING ï‚· Worked as Director and teacher at Mithila Art Institute, Madhubani from the year it was established in 2003 till 2008 by which time the school had become an international success. TOURS AND LECTURES ï‚· In 2005,Gave talks at University of Texts, University of Oklahoma, University of Syria use, University of Baltimore on my art and art of Mithila in general. ï‚· Invited by the Asia Society of Bombay for talks at National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai in Jan 2007. ï‚· Participated in an international seminar titled 'Our pictures,Our words' on the contemporary artistic practices in Madhubani at India International Centre, New Delhi., 2007. ï‚· Speaker at Vernacular , in Flux talk at India Art Fair moderated by Annapurna Garimella, a renowned art historian in Feb 2017. ï‚· Speaker at Ted Ex talk at LN Mittal Institute , Jaipur, in Jan 2018. ï‚· Speaker at Sovereign Words at Dhaka Art Summit organised by Office of Contemporary Art, Norway in 2018. Exhibitions ï‚· Works shown in an exhibition titled BENEATH THE BANYAN TREE at Syria use University , USA, 2001. ï‚· Works shown as part of a major retrospective show of Mithila Painting at Museum of Crafts and Folk Arts, San Francisco, 2005. ï‚· 14 paintings from ' The Gujarat Series' inspired by the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat shown in EDGE OF DESIRE- a major exhibition of contemporary art ( 1993- 2003) which began in 2004 in Australia going through North America, Mexico and finally India ( Delhi & Mumbai). ï‚· Paintings from the Gujarat Series exhibited in Ahmed a bad at Gufa as part of the fifth anniversary of the Gujarat riots in Feb 2007.

			 								Practicing a traditional form of art named for the ancient region of Mithila in the state of Bihar in eastern India, Santosh Kumar Das draws inspiration from Hindu mythology and iconography, incidents in recent Indian history and anecdotes from everyday life.

Employing Mithila art’s unique Madhubani style and technique, he reinvents enduring themes while paving new ground.
Das attended art college at the MS University of Baroda, and was the first teacher at the Mithala Art Institute in the small town of Madubhani. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Asia Society in New York.
