Tom Vattakhuzy
INTRODUCTION

Tom Vattakuzhy was born in Kerala in 1967 and decided to live the life of an artist at grade four in school. But, due to the lack of family support, after studying in local art schools, he stranded away years doing teaching job and illustrating periodicals until he mustered courage to pursue Studies in Art. Joined Kalabhawan, Santiniketan in 1991 and completed bachelors degree in Fine Art in 1996 and then studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda in 1996 – 1998. He taught art at the fine art collages in Kerala for about four years and subsequently in an International School in Qatar for about eight years. Realizing that teaching affects his art practice, he quit his job in 2010 and returned home to involve himself more in his practice of art. He resumed illustrating periodicals reappraising it’s hitherto conventions and synthesizing it with the visual syntax of his paintings. He has exhibited his works in various exhibitions in India and abroad. He has been the recipient of many awards like AIFACS Award, New Delhi in 1997 and 1998, Kerala Lalita Kala Academy Award, Govt. Of Kerala in 1997, Haren Das Award, Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta in 1995 etc. His works take root from the existential angst especially that of the middle class, upon the present day socio-cultural milieu.
