About the craft: Pahari region (Hill states of Punjab) is well known for tradition of illustrious embroidery on articles made by women in their leisure time with great passion. The embroidery was seen on religious textiles, apparel and other utilitarian household objects. The most famed were embroidered coverlets known as dhkanu (square coverlets) or chhabu (circular coverlets) used for covering ceremonial gifts and offerings for gods and rulers. They are also popularly known as Chamba Rumals. About the product: It is made on unbleached muslin using natural dyed untwisted silk yarns. The color scheme, variety of stitches appropriate according to the motifs, textures and other fine details were meticulously designed and worked with great finesse by embroiderer. Embroidery is similar on both sides of fabric and embroidered in minute stitches. The filling is done using dorukha tanka (long and short darning stitch) and encroaching satin stitch. Kacha tanka (running stitch) is used for outline and phuman (fabric tassels) with colored beads are used to decorate edges. The entire composition is enclosed aesthetically in unusual floral border, where stitches are taken in outer space leaving the floral motifs unembroidered. Design, stitches, textures, colors, dyes and other detailing along with edgings are conceptualized Dr. Rohini Arora, drawn by Shri Prixit Sharma and embroidered by Shrimati Anita Devi.
