Dokra is an ancient 5000 years old craft that originates in West Bengal before moving to Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, etc. It is primarily a metallurgy craft under which Bronze and Copper Alloys figurines are made using a ‘lost wax casting’ known as ‘cire perdue’ in French. Fun fact lost wax technique was practiced in Indus Valley and Egyptian Civilization during the 3rd millennium BC. Discarded metal containers or scarp is used for raw materials and a mold made of local mud and rice chaffs, which is further dried and filled with metal pieces before using tar instead of wax for the burning process. The firing is to mainly get the tar and fill the mold with molten metal before the process of molding and crafting. Craft: Dokra
