Origination of Talapatrachitras: Odisha
†The story telling pictures and the decorations done on the specially treated palm- leaves essentially show the ethnic sense of art of the Odisha tradition.
Manikandan Punnakkal, the well established traditional mural painter of Kerala, fascinated by the Odisha tradition of ‘Talapatrachitras’, tried to understand the process and aesthetic of it by interacting with the village artists of Odisha.
With his mastery over line, Mr. Punnakkal creates drawings with ink pen on palm- leaves keeping the original colour of the leaves as it is to give emphasis on the linear quality of form. Pasting the pieces of leaves on paper with an intention to show the size, texture and colour of the leaves, he gives accent on the linear quality of form as well as the nature of the medium itself.
Manikandan’s black ink rendition of forms on the natural colour surface of the palm- leaves is showing the steady flow of lines described in the Silpa texts on Indian art. Keeping the traditional pristine condition he depicts stylised human forms, motifs of nature and ornaments.
‘ Talapatrachitras’ display not just professional astuteness but also the aesthetic sense of the purity of line which is remarkably rendered by Manikandan Punnakkal in his works. The real contact with tradition in the present context can flaunt the precious heritage of the country. â€
