INTRODUCTION
Avani-Kumaon has been creating sustainable livelihood options in the hills of Kumaon, India. We've trained women and men to hand weave and bring their products to the international and domestic market. We work together with them to create high-quality, modern but timeless stoles, shawls, saris, cushions, blankets, rugs, knit-wear, and apparel . All our textiles are high-quality, hand-made, and have a near zero-waste production chain, as we only use organic source materials and use renewable energies. Asides from the weaves we produce, we have also created a whole range of natural dyes and pastes, organic art supplies, and lifestyle products.
ABOUT SHOP OWNER
Rashmi Bharti is the founder of Avani-Kumaon, a non-profit based in the foothills of the Himalaya. Together with Rajnish Jain, Rashmi arrived in the region over twenty years ago. She was smitten by the gorgeous landscapes, but was concerned with the difficult life conditions of the villagers she lived with. The lack of livelihood options had pushed men to migrate to cities and women and children were left to handle all the difficult agricultural and domestic tasks. Rashmi and Rajnish have ever since strived to create sustainable livelihood options for the villagers, using locally appropriate technologies such as solar panels and a pine-needle gasifier. Their moto is to leave the world a little bit more beautiful then they found it.
