INTRODUCTION

Born and raised in the small coastal town of Mangalore, India, Andrade’s paintings are an ode to Indian traditional art, while he uses realism to depict the everyday scenes of semi-urban towns or current affairs. His art is an expression of the everyday ordinary. Themes revolve around daily scenarios experienced in and around his life. Nature, climate, indigenous Dravidian practices, transition spaces between the built vernacular and the open - play such a vivid role in one’s life and is in essence captured in his creations my means of capturing realistic lighting and use of extensive color, tropical foliage, rustic architecture and issues with rampant, fast paced, unsustainable urbanisation. He sees art in the everyday ordinary, the new juxtapositioned with the old, aesthetics, layers and hidden clues all amalgamated into one. Natural light, imperative to daily life in India, in its various forms – day break, a sultry summer afternoon, overcast skies, dusk – evoke a varied plethora of emotions in him and is hence captured in the art Andrade creates. He uses multiple transparent and translucent layering to arrive at the colours that make his art. Textures are created using unique everyday ordinary household tools. This imagery of Indian aesthetic has evolved over time during his artistic journey and has been inspired by folk art.
