The Joy in Photography
Vikram Joy
INTRODUCTION
The Joy in Photography is a platform to showcase the works of accomplished Indian photographer Yog Joy. In the words of noted Indian writer Mulk Raj Anand, ‘Yog Joy was one of the few photographers of the decisive moment.’
A prolific photojournalist of his times, the late Yog Joy (1938-1996) cut through the artifice of art and daily reportage to capture life in its varied avatars. At a time when digital photography was not yet accessible, Joy’s viewfinder closed in on situations and subjects as they were and yet managed to present unique views, a result of his sensitive exploration.
Today as digital technology exaggerates colours and scenes, these rare black and white as well as colour images shot by the photographer (1960s to 1980s) come across as a breath of fresh air. Curated by his son, Vikram Joy, also a photographer of repute under his company, The Joy in Photography, the images (both colour and black and white) showcase scenes of the sand dunes of Rajasthan, the rustic life in the villages, poignant portraits as well as landscapes. The set of black and whites are the most arresting and mirror life realistically. The people and places in the varied images will remind the viewer of a world the way it existed many decades ago but the poignancy and the visual expressions captured by Joy make it just as relevant to the present.
