The granular texture and accidental shapes offer a perfect foil to his naturalistic rendering and also draws attention to the formal qualities of paint, in which he remains equally interested.
His conviction is a very earthly one of live and let live but the sophistication that he employs in conveying it proves that simple need not be simplistic.
