INTRODUCTION

Wildlife is a unique creation of nature. Mesmerizing, awe inspiring world of colors, forms shapes and sounds in perfect harmony. This world is what beckons me to walk around with my sketch book and camera and an unending appetite to try to bring these songs from the woods to viewers, to cherish what is real to the core and truly governed by the rules set by nature herself.
Reduction of habitat, pollution of environment and myriad food habits of humans are threatning the survival of several species around the world. Tigers, elephants being flagship species attract the majority, but one should not forget nature has created other magnificent creatures too, from little red crabs to bubbling mudskippers, from eagles to tiny humming birds, each unique in its own way and sincere with its responsibilities towards the forest. The cornucopia of flora and fauna the Indian jungle offers is huge. Sketching them, painting them has been a part of life for me and the fire still burns in my belly as it burned during my college days.
Coming to painting wildlife, I felt and strongly feel that an animal actually speaks through his eyes, the habitat, light etc only helps in bringing the actual composition alive. Normally I tend to work with a fixed set of hues but don’t feel afraid to use certain other colors that are normally avoided by majority of artists, for the sake of particular paintings. Using dull colors help as majority of the animals in Indian jungles comes out at dawn or dusk, when a dusky fog descends on the jungle, making it impossible to bring out the exact contour of every tree or every bush. Deviating from the natty gritty of grammar is an old habit of mine and I am not afraid of doing it as my primary intention is to impart the feeling of a real forest through my work. Sketching on field is difficult and many a time’s mistakes do happen. Mistakes are our greatest teacher. I would like to quote artist Tony Forest “Are you an artist with your own rules?, Bin them. “I never use black”” I use this blue”. To have these rules only restricts you. You can certainly have general rules of doing things and stick within selected colors but treat each painting on its own merit”. For example, if a particular painting would benefit from the use of a specific color, use it. I try to do that and when I paint I have only one rule, THERE ARE NO RULES. I try to bring to you the mystic of Indian forests, its unique residents through my paint brush, a dream I cherished from my childhood days.
