INTRODUCTION

In Shibpur-Howrah, a small hamlet, on the outskirts of Kolkata, away from the city lights, in a secluded part of the world, lived a boy. He spent his days reading books, full of wonder, between the spirit of exploration and the musings of a fantasy world that only existed in his books and his curious mind, his own universe, full of secret passages and mysterious buildings. His curiosity found its cure amongst his father's brethren, a group of intellectuals- the literary and artistic kind. Poets, filmmakers, journalists, all inspired him to think beyond the boundaries of academic learning and made him seek out the arts very early in life. One could say that he revelled in his experiences. He found freedom in being a part of different groups of people, different worlds, real as well as fantasy, sometimes as a bystander, mostly protected, but definitely an active member. His teenage years were the beginning of his adventurous life. Although he was a good student, a spat with his professor steered him further away from academic life. The circumstances of his consequent departure from school and admission into the most prestigious art college in Kolkata were indeed extraordinary. It could be called sheer luck, or genius preparation, but he found himself one day, hanging on to the door of a crowded bus, on his way to the big city for the first time in his life, all alone yet full of the same sense of adventure that he had when he was a young boy.
