The name Ardhanarishvara means "the Lord Who is half woman."
In the Ardhanarishwara painting, we see that half of Lord Shankar's body is of woman and half of body is of man. This avatar gives the message of equality of both women and men. The importance of men in society, family and life is equally important for women. Their life is incomplete without each other, both of them fulfill each other.
Story behind painting : According to Shiv Puran, many questions began to arise in the mind of Brahmaji, when there was no growth of the subjects in the world, then he resolved to create Maithuni creation. But till then the clan of women was not born from Shiva, then Brahmaji did penance to satisfy Shiva with strength. God Shiva was satisfied with the penance of Brahmaji, took the form of Ardhanarishvara and approached him and separated the part of Goddess Shakti located in his body. After that Brahmaji worshiped him. Pleased with his devotion, Shakti created another Shakti of his own kind of radiance from the middle of his Bhrkuti which took birth as his daughter in Daksha's home....
Ardhanareeshvara is a combination of three words “Ardha,” “Nari,” and “Ishwara” means “half,” “woman,” and “lord,” respectively, which when combined means the lord whose half is a woman.
It is believed that the God is Lord Shiva and the woman part is his consort Goddess Parvati or Shakti.
The Ardhanareeshvara represents a constructive and generative power. Ardhanareeshvara symbolizes male and female principles cannot be separated.
God has given this message with Ardhanarishwar that women in society and family should also get the same respect and prestige as men. There should be no discrimination with them…
