The name Ardhanarishvara means "the Lord Who is half woman."
Story : According to Shiv Puran, many questions began to arise in the mind of Brahmaji, when there was no growth of the subjects in the world, then he resolved to create Maithuni creation. But till then the clan of women was not born from Shiva, then Brahmaji did penance to satisfy Shiva with strength. God Shiva was satisfied with the penance of Brahmaji, took the form of Ardhanarishvara and approached him and separated the part of Goddess Shakti located in his body. After that Brahmaji worshiped him. Pleased with his devotion, Shakti created another Shakti of his own kind of radiance from the middle of his Bhrkuti which took birth as his daughter in Daksha's home....
Ardhanareeshvara is a combination of three words “Ardha,” “Nari,” and “Ishwara” means “half,” “woman,” and “lord,” respectively, which when combined means the lord whose half is a woman.
It is believed that the God is Lord Shiva and the woman part is his consort Goddess Parvati or Shakti
God has given this message with Ardhanarishwar that women in society and family should also get the same respect and prestige as men. There should be no discrimination with them…
Purusha is the male principle and passive force of the universe, while Prakriti is the female active force; both are "constantly drawn to embrace and fuse with each other, though... separated by the intervening axis". The union of Purusha (Shiva) and Prikriti (Shiva's energy, Shakti) generates the universe, an idea also manifested in the union of the Linga of Shiva and Yoni of Devi creating the cosmos.
The Mahabharata lauds this form as the source of creation.
